From early on, a young girl growing up on a farm in Iowa played with a few dolls and other girly things, but as far back as she remembers she had a pencil in her hand to draw horses and other animals.
Her formal art education started at the St. Paul School of Art in St. Paul, Minnesota. While the Navy moved Carol Jo around with husband Jack, she studied art and painting from several colleges and universities. Carol Jo completed her art degree from Iowa State University.
Carol Jo was ultimately replanted in Southeast Georgia and continued working in the art and graphic design fields, completing a Webmaster Certification from Florida State University and attending graduate school at the Savannah College of Art & Design.
A strong lover of horses, Carol Jo founded Gray Horse Graphics Design Studio, a graphic and web design company in 1998. Carol Jo is a full time artist, graphic designer and Webmaster.

Carol Jo Smidt was the first place winner of the of the Discovery Map cover contest. Her artwork ‚"Jewels By The Sea‚" is the cover for the second edition of the Discovery Map for the northeast Florida and southeast Georgia area.

Creating a piece of art is a mystery. No artist can fully explain why a particular work of art was created. When you buy an artwork you capture forever a piece of that mystery.
Most people love a work of art because it profoundly affects them. Art may remind them of times, places, or people or maybe experiences that were personally moving.
Original art is intended to inspire because it helps express things that lie deep inside us. The art serves as a bridge to help us experience and share something wonderful and profound about ourselves. It is no wonder then that people say, "I don't know why I bought this piece of art; all I know is that I love it".
